Chapter Thirteen

Taylor never did find Sue that evening, but she did find Roxy tucked in a quiet corner of the Expo work room reading on her phone.

“You look like you got hit by a truck.” Roxy’s face was more sympathetic than her words, which was a relief considering the tension between them.

“Could be worse, I guess.” A few dedicated quilters ran their machines filling the work room with a quiet, industrial buzz. It felt safe and familiar. “I wish you had stuck around so we could talk though.” Taylor pulled out a chair and sat with her old friend. The tension between them hurt, and she found herself feeling defeated over it.

“I just couldn’t. The things I would have said if I had stuck around while I was still angry with Belle!” Roxy slipped her phone into her pocket. “I like you a lot, Taylor. But I love my son.” Her voice broke on the last word.

Taylor had an inkling of an idea of what Roxy meant, but she still didn’t see why this had to come between them. Especially if Belle and Jonah both said that Belle had nothing to do with getting the YouTube channel shut down.

“How is Jonah?”

“He’s having the time of his life. He has no concept of money or the long term.” Her face scrunched up in fear. “He isn’t old enough to realize what he’s losing.”

“Then maybe it’s a good thing YouTube is holding on to his cool million.”

“I guess I agree with that. He thinks this is some kind of game.” She rested her head in her hand. “If I hear him talk about his vulnerable mother one more time, I’m going to find him and beat him black and blue.”

“He would deserve it.” Taylor smiled, but didn’t feel it in her heart.

“He refuses to talk to his father about the money situation. He says it’s a distraction from the death which is his calling.”

“His calling? But he’s just a kid.” Taylor tapped her toe on the polished wood floor. Even though she’d helped law enforcement a few times now, she’d hardly call crime fighting her calling.

“He’s talking big and leaving the actual issue of his YouTube account alone as though it doesn’t matter. Worse though, he refuses to go back to school.”

“No…” Taylor gripped her hands together in frustration. Belle’s set of friends had all seemed to graduate early—Belle first, then Dayton, and after bit of hard work over the summer, Cooper had been able to ditch his senior year, as well, with a real diploma to show for it.

But Jonah was different. Jonah was dropping out. Taylor’s stomach fell. A million dollars earned and lost at seventeen would never make up for lacking the basics of your education. “Do you think he might actually care about the murder?” There was always a chance he could be convinced to study crime and law enforcement.

“I’m his mother, and even I can’t say I believe that.” Roxy raked her hand through her curls. “I just want to run away from all this.
